Bridging Borders: A Gratitude-filled Chronicle for Better Burma's Supporters

We share an update from our team leader after a recent donation trip. We thank those who continue to contribute to support our ongoing humanitarian missions.

Today, I find myself humbled and honored to share the story of a compassionate journey that spans borders. It concerns the hardships faced by the monastic community in Burma, and the rays of hope that have emerged through the darkness because of the kindness of donors like you.

Due to the country’s political upheaval, our revered Buddhist monks and nuns found themselves grappling with the harsh realities of an economic downturn. These resilient individuals suddenly faced challenges in meeting their basic needs and felt uncomfortable asking their long-suffering lay supporters for help. Although they have renounced material acquisitions and strictly follow the Vinaya (monastic discipline), the economic collapse of our country has nonetheless cast a long shadow on their lives, impacting not only their material well-being but also challenging the essence of their spiritual commitment.

Enter the compassionate hearts of overseas donors who, despite the geographical distance, felt a deep connection to the struggles faced by the Burmese monastic community. Your earmarked funds became a beacon of hope to them, a testament to the belief that solidarity knows no boundaries. The monastic community, ever grateful for this unexpected support from abroad, found solace in knowing that they were not alone in their journey.

The earmarked funds have been instrumental in addressing the immediate needs of our monks and nuns. The impact extends beyond the tangible; it resonates in the hearts of those who have received this support, uplifting their spirits and restoring a sense of dignity.

To our valued donors: we hold dear your trust in our work, and pledge to continue our efforts in addressing the ongoing challenges faced by the monastic community in Burma. The journey toward positive change continues; your contributions have become a cornerstone in building a brighter future for those who have faced adversity. On behalf of my team, I extend our deepest gratitude to each and every one of you who has played a part in this compassionate endeavor. Your commitment to making a difference has fostered a sense of connection that transcends borders.

Let me conclude my report with the words spoken by one of the beneficiary monks who received our donation, “Even for the urban monasteries and the ones who used to have regular sponsors, they were also required to buy rice for their own food at the beginning of Vassa. As for us, we mainly depend on the alms food offered by laymen. In this hard situation even for our poor lay sponsors, how could we go alms round? We only go once or two days a week these days. On other days, we cook for ourselves. Now, you solve some of our concerns for a period of time.”
