Supporting Political Prisoners in Myanmar

Thanks to the amazing support of our donors around the world, we have been able to continue funding the Prisoner Support Fund. Through a trusted contact, their group is able to get food and other essential items to political prisoners who have been wrongly put behind bars, at the hands of this illegal military. We have only been able to provide this essential and life-saving support through the individual donations given by readers just like you! As we have no big funder or grant, you have contributed to keeping this project going. And if you might consider a recurring donation of even a few dollars a month, it can help us better plan for the future.

We wish to thank the donors from around the world who have contributed to Better Burma, so as to help the Prisoner Support Fund in providing essential assistance to political prisoners currently detained in Myanmar. The dire situation faced by these individuals, including inadequate access to food and nutritions, necessitates immediate support to ensure their basic needs are met and their rights upheld. We wish to tell you a little about our work, although for obvious reasons we must keep much of the information confidential. This is why, unfortunately, we are also not able to share any actual photos. In fact, one of our members was recently detained, and another one is being searched for by the military, so we must take even greater precautions so as to be able to continue on with our work. This is also why we are so appreciative of the ongoing support that Better Burma has shown towards us, which we know is only possible thanks to so many individuals similarly stepping forth. Thank you!

Current Situation: According to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP), as of February 15, 2024, there are still 19,930 people detained as political prisoners in Myanmar. Tragically, the conditions within these prisons have led to numerous deaths among the incarcerated population. Reports from reliable sources such as the AAPP and Radio Free Asia indicate that at least 73 political prisoners have died while in detention, with causes ranging from lack of medical treatment to harsh conditions within the prisons. This is why we are doing what we can to support those still behind bars, especially those who have no one to rely on.  It is essential to note that the conditions within the prisons are deplorable, with inadequate food and hygiene posing significant risks to the health and well-being of the detainees.

While prisons are formally responsible for providing food to their inmates, the quality and hygiene of the meals provided are often substandard. In many cases, the food provided is insufficient and lacks proper nutritional value, posing a risk of malnutrition and foodborne illnesses. By donating prison food through the Prisoner Support Fund, we ensure that the basic nutritional needs of the political prisoners are met, reducing the risk of illness and improving their overall well-being.

Better Burma’s support has allowed us to directly contribute to providing essential food and support to political prisoners in Myanmar. By addressing their basic needs, including access to nutritious food and hygiene products, we aim to alleviate their suffering and demonstrate solidarity with their cause. Furthermore, by extending support to the families of the prisoners, we provide much-needed assistance to those affected by the unjust incarceration of their loved ones.

Your generous donation of 30,000 Baht will make a significant difference in the lives of political prisoners in Myanmar. By addressing their immediate needs and advocating for their rights, we stand in solidarity with those who have been unjustly detained and reaffirm our commitment to justice and human rights.

Thank you for your generosity and support.
