Welcoming the families of defected soldiers

Thanks to the generous contribution of our many donors, we have been able to support Pik Phu, a Thai-based group that cares for spouses and children of defected soldiers. According to their team, many soldiers wish to join the democracy movement, but hesitate before doing so as they are unsure what will become of their family. Thus, by providing Pik Phu the means necessary to care for these family members, it gives soldiers the motivation to leave this murderous regime and join the people’s side. In the following update, Pik Phu provides information as to their recent activities. As there is more work to be done, we are grateful for any further contribution that you may consider offering, of any size!

One of the challenges faced by the families of CDM soldiers who switched sides in the struggle for democracy is access to healthcare. In a country where healthcare costs are high and many people cannot afford medical expenses, it becomes a source of anxiety when health problems arise and they lack the means to cover the costs.

Our aim is to support the overall health and resilience of CDM soldiers' family members, ensuring that they can access necessary healthcare services. To meet their medical needs, Pik Phu has provided support.

Thanks to the assistance of Better Burma, we have been able to:

●      Cover three months of medical expenses for a CDM officer to undergo surgery.

●      Purchase emergency medicine for the wife of a CDM Navy soldier who was in the forest fleeing from conflict (including salary and medical expenses).

●      Cover medical expenses for a CDM officer's female family member during an emergency hospitalization.

●      Provide funds for a child of a CDM soldier to receive medical care when sick.

●      Support the wife of a CDM deputy in accessing hospital care.

●      Cover hospital expenses for a female activist.

Additionally, we have been able to support maternity expenses for three pregnant women. Recognizing the importance of childbirth for both mothers and children, this support represents an example of humanitarianism, ensuring a healthy and well-medicated birth.

On behalf of self-employed mothers and children, Pitak Phu expresses our heartfelt gratitude for being able to assist those in need with the support of Better Burma. To the CDM soldiers, we extend our sincere thanks.
